Overview

Garmin Airmar SS60 12° Tilt Marine Transducer (010-11868-21)

Introduction

The Garmin Airmar SS60 is a through-hull marine transducer engineered to deliver dual-frequency sonar imaging for serious fishing and marine navigation applications. The 12° mounting angle positions the transducer to return clear target separation and bottom tracking across multiple depth ranges, making it an effective tool for detecting fish structures and monitoring seabed composition in saltwater and freshwater environments.

Key Features

  • Dual-frequency operation at 50 kHz and 200 kHz for versatile sonar coverage and target discrimination
  • 600 watts RMS power output for extended range and signal strength in open-water applications
  • 12-degree tilt angle engineered to optimize beam direction and reduce water column clutter
  • 8-pin connector for direct compatibility with Garmin chartplotter and sounder systems
  • High-grade stainless steel construction rated for saltwater, brackish, and freshwater immersion
  • Through-hull mounting design with compact 2.5-inch diameter housing for space-efficient hull integration
  • Precision-threaded barrel design ensures watertight seal and vibration-resistant installation

Data Insights

Testing and field reports indicate that the SS60 delivers up to 30% improvement in fish target detection when compared to standard single-frequency transducers operating under identical conditions. The 50 kHz band penetrates deeper water for structure identification on continental shelves and offshore banks, while the 200 kHz band resolves smaller targets and shallow-water clarity at ranges between 50 and 400 feet depending on water clarity and bottom composition. The 12° cone angle strikes a balance between beam width and directional focus, reducing false echoes that compromise sounder accuracy.

Usage Instructions

Position the transducer flush against the hull following Garmin's installation guidelines to ensure optimal acoustic transmission. The 12° angle must remain consistent with the hull orientation—excessive tilting causes signal loss and distorted target imaging. Connect the 8-pin connector to your compatible Garmin chartplotter using the supplied pin configuration diagram. Run initial sonar calibration through the system menu to synchronize transducer sensitivity with water temperature and salinity conditions.

Design & Material

The SS60 combines functional marine engineering with a streamlined form factor that minimizes installation complexity. Its cylinder-and-flange design allows rapid swap-out without removing existing through-hull fittings, reducing downtime during maintenance or upgrades.

  • Marine-grade 316 stainless steel exterior resists pitting and galvanic corrosion in saltwater immersion
  • Two-piece barrel construction separates the transducer crystal assembly from the external housing for serviceability
  • Integral flange provides clamping surface and distributes load across the hull without stress concentration
  • Epoxy-sealed connector block protects internal wiring from salt spray and moisture intrusion
  • Streamlined teardrop shape reduces drag and minimizes cavitation noise at high-speed operation
  • Compact 2.5-inch footprint accommodates retrofit installations on boats with limited through-hull real estate

Final Verdict

The Garmin Airmar SS60 (model 010-11868-21) is purpose-built for anglers and marine professionals who demand accurate sonar performance without the complexity of legacy systems. Its proven dual-frequency architecture, robust saltwater construction, and direct Garmin compatibility make it the logical choice for replacing worn transducers or upgrading older sounder equipment. If your Garmin system requires an 8-pin transducer with 12° mounting angle, this is the specification-matched product that delivers measurable improvement in target detection and navigation accuracy.
