Overview
Garmin GPSMAP 8624 24-Inch Marine Chartplotter and Sonar Combo
Introduction
The Garmin GPSMAP 8624 is a professional-grade marine navigation system that combines a 24-inch Full HD IPS touchscreen with integrated 1-kW CHIRP dual-channel sonar. This chartplotter delivers the real-time mapping, precise depth reading, and sonar clarity required by serious mariners, commercial anglers, and yacht cruisers who operate in demanding conditions where navigation accuracy directly impacts safety and operational efficiency.
Key Features
- 24-inch Full HD IPS touchscreen with edge-to-edge display and sunlight-readable viewing angles
- 1-kW Dual-Channel CHIRP sonar providing depth detection and target separation to 1,000 feet below and around the vessel
- Preloaded Garmin Navionics+ maps covering inland waterways and coastal regions with Auto Guidance+ route planning
- NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 protocol support for integration with autopilots, AIS receivers, and networked sensors
- Live Sonar compatibility enabling real-time wireless underwater imagery when paired with compatible Garmin sonar systems
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless chart updates and remote device control via compatible mobile applications
Data Insights
The dual-channel CHIRP architecture separates fish and structure detail with exceptional clarity at depths exceeding 1,000 feet, addressing the sonar performance gap found in entry-level units. Auto Guidance+ technology analyzes water depth, obstacle locations, and navigational hazards to calculate optimal routes, reducing total travel time by up to 30 percent compared to manual course plotting. The 24-inch display delivers approximately 1.5 times more screen real estate than 17-inch competitors, reducing the need to zoom and pan during critical navigation moments.
Usage Instructions
Mount the unit securely to your helm using the included bracket options, which support both flush and surface mounting configurations. Power on the device, then access the home menu to load your preferred Navionics+ chart region and sonar frequency settings. Use the touchscreen to create waypoints, activate Auto Guidance routes, and switch between sonar views. Download the latest map and software updates periodically through the Wi-Fi menu to maintain accuracy and access new chart features.
Design and Material
The GPSMAP 8624 features a consolidated black bezel design that projects a professional, minimal aesthetic on modern helms. The unit is engineered with materials rated for continuous saltwater exposure, UV degradation resistance, and thermal cycling across temperature extremes.
- Sealed internal architecture protecting circuit boards and sonar processors from spray and humidity ingress
- Bonded glass touchscreen maintaining tactile responsiveness despite salt residue and wet conditions
- Aluminum and corrosion-resistant composite mounting hardware compatible with standard 19-inch cabinet rails
- Passive thermal management design eliminating fan noise in enclosed helm spaces
- SmartMode software integration simplifying menu navigation during active fishing or high-speed transit
- Power-Pole® system compatibility allowing automatic shallow-water anchoring feedback through the display
Final Verdict
The Garmin GPSMAP 8624 represents a consolidated approach to marine electronics, eliminating the need for separate chartplotter and sonar modules while delivering the clarity and precision that professional operations demand. If your boating involves navigating unfamiliar waters, improving fishing success through advanced sonar, or integrating multiple onboard systems through NMEA connectivity, this unit directly addresses those operational requirements. Purchase the Garmin GPSMAP 8624 to bring navigation and sonar performance into the modern era.
