Overview
Garmin GWind Race Wired Transducer (010-01228-00) – High-Precision Wind Data for Competitive Sailing
Introduction
The Garmin GWind Race Wired Transducer delivers the precise wind measurement data that competitive sailors depend on to optimize tactics and gain performance advantages during races. Built specifically for racing sailboats, this wired transducer combines optic reading technology with a three-bladed propeller design to capture True Wind Speed (TWS) and True Wind Angle (TWA) with exceptional accuracy, even in light wind conditions where most sensors struggle. For sailors who measure success in thousandths of a knot, this precision translates directly to faster boat handling and smarter strategic decisions on the water.
Key Features
- 3.3-foot (1-meter) straight pole elevates the sensor above the mast to reduce turbulence errors from sail wash by up to 98%
- Three-bladed propeller design maintains constant efficiency for True Wind Speed measurement across varying wind conditions
- Twin-fin stabilizer geometry minimizes True Wind Angle fluctuations caused by boat heeling and movement
- Optic reading technology delivers superior performance and linearity at wind speeds below 3 knots
- NMEA 2000 compatible GND 10 Black Box Bridge integrates seamlessly with Garmin chartplotters and Nexus sail equipment
- Corrosion-resistant aluminum and composite construction rated for extended saltwater exposure without performance degradation
Data Insights
The GWind Race achieves approximately 98% accuracy in wind measurement by isolating the sensor from mast-induced turbulence through its elevated 1-meter pole configuration. The twin-fin design significantly reduces angular deviation caused by boat motion, while the optic sensor technology excels in marginal wind—delivering stable readings when many mechanical sensors produce noisy, unreliable data. This combination of mechanical design and sensor technology ensures that racing crews receive the consistent, high-resolution data required for competitive decision-making, particularly during fleet racing where wind conditions fluctuate minute-to-minute.
Usage Instructions
Install the transducer at the recommended 3.3-foot height above your mast using the included mounting pole. Connect the wired transducer to a compatible Garmin chartplotter via NMEA 2000 network, then configure wind reference settings (apparent wind, true wind, and magnetic variation) to match your sailing conditions and navigation display preferences. Calibrate the zero-wind baseline during setup to ensure angular accuracy. For maximum reliability, periodically inspect the propeller and fin assembly for marine growth or damage, and rinse with fresh water after saltwater use.
Design & Material
The GWind Race Wired Transducer combines functional aerodynamic form with marine-grade engineering. Its sleek profile minimizes wind resistance while the robust internal architecture handles the constant motion and exposure demands of competitive sailing. Every component is selected to maximize both measurement precision and durability in challenging saltwater environments.
- Aluminum mounting pole and composite sensor housing resist corrosion without sacrificing weight or vibration damping
- Three-blade propeller geometry optimized for low-speed response and mechanical durability under repeated tacking stress
- Twin-fin tail design positioned for maximum stability without creating aerodynamic drag that affects boat speed
- Molded corrosion-resistant connectors rated for continuous immersion in saltwater conditions
- Lightweight overall assembly (under 2 pounds) simplifies single-handed installation and does not require reinforced mast brackets
- Precision-machined bearing surfaces ensure smooth propeller rotation for the full service life, typically 5+ seasons of regular racing
Final Verdict
For racing sailors who cannot afford unreliable or delayed wind data, the Garmin GWind Race Wired Transducer delivers the accuracy and stability that transforms raw wind conditions into tactical advantage. Its proven optic sensor technology, proven 98% measurement accuracy, and seamless Garmin integration make it the industry standard for one-design and offshore racing fleets. Whether you're competing in fleet racing or pursuing personal performance goals, this transducer provides the high-confidence data you need to make faster decisions and execute better strategy. Add this precision instrument to your boat today and sail with the confidence that comes from knowing your wind better than the competition.
